Training in Phuket in high season, November to February. What the gym is like when it is full, what changes, and why booking early genuinely matters.

High season in Phuket runs roughly November to February. The weather is at its best, the gym is at its busiest, and accommodation near the gym fills up weeks ahead. If you want a specific room or a specific package over those months, book earlier than feels necessary. Everything else about the training stays the same.

Most people planning a training trip pick their dates around work and flights, then discover the accommodation question late. In low season that is fine. In high season it is the thing that decides whether your trip is easy or annoying.

This guide covers what actually changes when the gym is full, what stays the same, what booking early gets you, and how to decide whether high season is the right window for you. If you want the broader weather-and-seasons picture first, our guide on the best time of year to train in Phuket covers the whole calendar.

What High Season Actually Means Here

The weather. November to February is the dry season. Less rain, lower humidity, and mornings that are genuinely pleasant rather than something to survive. For training twice a day, this is the difference that matters most. The heat in April and May is a real factor in how much work you can absorb.

The gym. Busier. More classes running at capacity, more people on the mats, more training partners to choose from.

The island. Busier too. Restaurants fuller, traffic heavier, beaches more crowded, prices higher across accommodation and transport.

The bookings. This is the practical one. Rooms near the gym, and the packages that include accommodation, fill up well in advance.

What Changes in a Busy Gym

Being honest about both sides of this.

What gets better:

  • More training partners. A full room means you can find someone your size, someone bigger, someone better, and someone newer. Variety is one of the fastest ways to improve, and it is the thing a quiet gym cannot give you.
  • Better energy. Big classes have a momentum that carries you through the rounds you would otherwise coast.
  • More people in your situation. If you are a solo visitor, high season is when the gym is full of other solo visitors. Making friends takes no effort at all.

What gets harder:

  • Less individual coaching time per person. Coaches are working across a bigger room. The coaching is the same standard, there is simply more of a queue for it.
  • Popular class times fill. Morning sessions are the busiest.
  • Less pad time in a packed class. If pad work is the reason you came, this matters.

The fix for both downsides is the same: train at the quieter times, or book a private session or two. More on that below.

Why Booking Early Genuinely Matters

This is not urgency for its own sake. Three things actually run out.

Accommodation near the gym. The closer to the gym, the earlier it goes. Walking distance is worth a lot when you are training twice a day and it is 32 degrees, so those places fill first.

Packages that bundle training and accommodation. These are limited by the rooms available, not the mat space, so they close before training-only options do.

Your preferred dates. Christmas and New Year specifically, which is its own case. Our guide on spending Christmas and New Year at a training camp covers that window.

How far ahead is early enough? For November and early December, six to eight weeks is usually comfortable. For the Christmas and New Year period, two to three months is more realistic. For January and February, six weeks is generally fine. These are guidelines, not guarantees, and they shift year to year.

How to Train Well in a Full Gym

A few practical things that make a busy period work in your favour.

Go to the less obvious sessions. The first morning class and the main evening class are the busiest. The sessions either side of them are quieter and you get more coach attention in them.

Introduce yourself on day one. In a full room, the coaches who know your name and your level are the ones who will find you. Saying “it is my first day, I am here for two weeks, I want to work on my kicks” takes ten seconds and changes your whole trip.

Book one private early. An hour of undivided coaching in your first few days gives you a specific list to work on for the rest of the trip, which makes the group sessions far more productive. Our guide on group classes versus private coaching covers how to decide.

Use the variety. A full room is an opportunity, not an obstacle. Rotate partners deliberately rather than pairing with the same person every session.

Watch your volume. Better weather makes it easier to train hard, which makes it easier to overdo it. Our guide on how often to train on a short stay still applies, good weather or not.

Is High Season Right for You?

High season suits you if: you want the best weather, you like a busy training environment, you are travelling solo and want an easy social side, or you are combining training with a proper holiday.

Consider other months if: you want maximum coach attention, you are on a tight budget, you dislike crowds, or your dates are flexible and you would rather have a quieter gym and cheaper accommodation.

Worth knowing: the shoulder months either side, late October and March, often give you most of the good weather with noticeably fewer people. If your dates are flexible and you are not tied to the holidays, those are quietly the best value windows in the year.

What Does Not Change

Worth saying plainly, because people worry about this.

The coaching standard, the class structure, and the way beginners are looked after do not change with the season. Beginner classes are still scaled. Sparring is still optional. Nobody gets lost in the crowd because the room is full. Our guide on whether training suits complete beginners holds in December exactly as it does in June.

Prices for training itself do not swing the way accommodation prices do. For current figures, check the pricing page rather than working from anything you read elsewhere, including this article. Rates and packages change, and this page is dated September 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is high season in Phuket?
Roughly November to February. The dry season runs a little wider than that, into March and April, but November to February is when the weather is best and the island is busiest.

How far in advance should I book a training trip in high season?
Six to eight weeks is usually comfortable for most of the window. For Christmas and New Year, aim for two to three months. Accommodation runs out well before training space does.

Is the gym too crowded to learn in high season?
No. Classes run at capacity but the structure and coaching standard stay the same. You get more training partners and slightly less individual pad time. A private session or two offsets that easily.

Is it more expensive to train in high season?
Training costs do not move much with the season. Accommodation, flights, and general island prices do. Check the pricing page for current training figures.

Can a complete beginner start in high season?
Yes. Beginner classes run year round and are scaled to the person. A busy room actually helps beginners, because there are more people at your level to train with.

What if I want a quieter gym?
Late October and March give you most of the good weather with fewer people, and are usually cheaper. The sessions either side of the main morning and evening classes are quieter in any month.

Book Before the Rooms Go

If November to February is your window, the training will be there whenever you arrive. The room ten minutes from the mats will not.

Have a look at the pricing and packages page to see what is available, and the accommodation options for the training-plus-stay side, which is the part that fills first. When your dates are settled, check availability and book here.
