You’ve probably heard the saying, “It takes a village.” Community building has never been something passive. Creating a safe space for people to be challenged, grow, and feel uncomfortable but supported is a massive undertaking. Because, you know, it really does take a village. Here at Bangtao, we’re committed to creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome. We see ourselves as a village building a village – and we couldn’t do that without the support of so many. So, what is it about Bangtao that sets it apart from the rest?
Bangtao was founded on friendship by a group of dream chasers who remain deeply committed to the game, sharing a distinctive dedication to honing their craft. With a true understanding of what it takes to build fighters, they’ve created an inclusive, fun atmosphere where everyone can strive to become the best version of themselves. This is who we are at Bangtao.
Each of our founders brings decades of experience spanning multiple continents to our world-class training center, which focuses on skill, resilience, and camaraderie. We’ve curated a specific culture unique to Bangtao. Come train, and you’ll see: We’re a community of good people striving to be the best. Everyone is welcome here, and we ensure everyone feels it too.
Let’s see what our founders have to say.
Frank Hickman
Head Wrestling Coach
“The team of people that I have around me is what makes Bangtao great. From the trainers and the front office staff, to the kitchen ladies and the cleaners. Everyone contributes something individually to the gym.”
Andrew “Woody” Wood
Head S&C Coach
“What makes Bangtao so amazing is the community we’ve brought with us from our previous work. We try to have a very welcoming place for anyone regardless of age, gender, nationality, religious views, or anything else. We’re a big melting pot of people, and good people at that. Everyone here has similar goals: train, enjoy themselves, and meet new people. I think we’ve created that culture here. One of the greatest things I think we can do is bring people together over sports, especially the sport of Muay Thai, and obviously MMA and fitness in a beautiful destination, such as Phuket, right by the beach.”
Adding that, “I think that’s one of the main things I absolutely love about the gym.”
George Hickman
Head MMA Coach
“I always ask customers for good feedback and bad feedback, especially if they’ve been to the other gyms around the island. And I’ve found that there was a common theme. It’s the atmosphere and the vibe of not only the gym but the staff and the coaches. It’s friendly here; everyone talks to each other here. We really want to make our customers feel at home, asking them where they’re from and whatnot. We just try to be very personal, and that’s just who we are naturally anyway.”
Alex Schild
Head BJJ Coach
“What makes Bangtao great is the people and the energy they bring. No matter how busy or stressful my life is, I know when I walk into the gym, I’ll be surrounded by good people and good energy, and every thing else becomes easier.”
In the nearly three short years since we’ve been open, Bangtao has become like a second home for so many of us on the island and around the world. We’ve gained recognition not just for our world-class coaches and training facilities but for our commitment to the game. This is thanks to the incredible people who support us and show up each day, giving their all. Without them, our coaches couldn’t do what they do. Their dedication and the grit of our entire team have allowed us to build a strong foundation that’s been crafted through years of hard work and hands-on commitment in the industry.
